This was a step back week. Several in our group are running 13 miles next Saturday. A few will run a half marathon here in town. So we took it easy and allowed our body to recover from the stresses we have put on it.

Especially for beginners, it is very important to rest enough. Every time you have an intense or long workout, you break down and fray your muscles, ligaments and tendons. The cells that are damaged have to repair in order for you to get stronger. If you don’t give them time to repair, you will get weaker instead.

Without enough rest, eventually, you find you have a strained muscle or tendon or a torn ligament. IT band issues, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, torn calf muscles, etc, are very common for people who increase their mileage by more than 10% weekly and/or do not schedule enough rest time between long runs. As we have emphasized from the beginning:
