ONLINE TRAINING

Course Marshals are safety officials at the race. It is your responsibility to oversee the safety of race participants in your zone. You report to the Course Manager with any questions or concerns. Eugene Police will also be on the course and should be obeyed in all cases. City, County, and Parks officials might also be present. If they make a request of you, do your best to comply as long as it is within your duties, and contact your Course Manager. Your duties include the following:

1. Stay in Your Zone
Be in your assigned zone with safety vest on. Safety vests will be at the start/finish line when you report on the morning of the race. City and County traffic laws require you to wear this vest at all times. It will help you be safe and attract attention of drivers and race participants.

2. Be Aware
It is possible there will be car traffic in your zone at the same time as race participants. There could also be other hazards. We can not anticipate every safety situation that might arise, so you should scan the area, and watch for anything that might present a hazard to your runners/walkers. If you are in doubt about a situation, contact your Course Manager. That is why he is there.

3. Alert Drivers
Attract attention of drivers and let them know there are runners on the road. While our runners do have the right of way within the race zones, that does not mean every driver will notice them and wait for them. It is not your job to stop traffic as you do not have that authority. But you can wave your arms to get their attention. Do not go out into traffic or put yourself in danger.

4. Be the Eyes and Ears of Participants in Your Zone
Attract attention of race participants and alert them to the presence of cars and other hazards in you zone. While our runners do have right of way within the race zones, that does not mean every driver will notice them and wait for them. If a runner is attempting to cross an intersection at the same time as a car, you must stop the runner before they are put in danger. Remind runners to stay near the side of the road, out of traffic, if possible.

5. Keep Race Participants on Course
If you see a runner/walker with a bib number turning off course, you should stop them and help them get on the right course. It is very frustrating for a race participant to get lost or go the wrong way. Course marshals are one of the 3 keys in helping keep everybody on course. There are also arrows on signs and on the pavement. If a racer turns off course intentionally, they will be disqualified. There are several reasons they might do so, including injury and/or exhaustion. You should ask if they need assistance and contact the Course Manager.

6. Call Course Manager for Minor Injuries
For runners in your zone who are injured, you are their first contact for getting help. In non-emergency cases such as scrapes, minor cuts, bruises, broken bones, muscle tears or strains, and very mild dehydration, you should call the Course Manager. The Course Manager will get a medical staff member out to help. If the participant can walk safely, you can send them to the nearest aid station to wait. Otherwise, they may stay with you. If you are First Aid Certified or a medical professional, you may apply first aid, but it is better to let the medical team care for the injury. They will have the supplies and preparation needed.

7. Call Ambulance or 911 for Medical Emergencies
In case of a medical emergency, call the ambulance or 911 immediately. Medical emergencies include, but are not limited to
Heart attack
Unconsciousness
Severe Dehydration
Lack of Breathing
Major Bleeding
These emergencies are very rare, but you need to be prepared to contact the ambulance or 911 immediately just in case.

8. Do Not Move Traffic Cones or Signs
These devices are placed by trained race officials according to a traffic control plan approved by City and County traffic officials. It is very important they stay put.
